Elina Juopperi is born in 1975 in Oulu, Finland.
At the moment, she lives and works between Paris and Finland. The past two years she was mainly worked around a huge photographic installation Kaikki kielen puhujat ( a project in which she photographed every person speaking Inari Sami-language). This work was done in northern Lapland and she enjoyed of this return to her childhood landscapes. Since endless forests and fields of Lapland are her souldscapes the nature often appears in her works. But rather than just simply presenting the nature, she rather study our relation to it. She was lived ten years in Paris, this metropolitan life have added dualism into her work.

As an improviser, his practice explores the value of fragility & in-determination involving a wide range of customized objects, analog and modified electronics, turntables and computer based interfaces in different combinations.
His work has appeared in different contexts including Museums, Galleries and Independent Spaces throughout Mexico, Europe, United States, Canada, Japan, Korea and South America.

Alban Muja was born in Mitrovica, Kosovo, in 1980. He lives and works in Pristina, Kosovo.
Muja’s artistic work includes painting, video installation, photography, drawing and performances. Influenced by the social and political transformation processes in his home country of Kosovo, Muja investigates History as well as socio-political themes and connects them to the position of the artists and their social position in Kosovo today.

PALESTINA | 2005 | video | 6′45”
Palestina, is an Albanian girl. Her name may sound strange and unusual, but her name is Palestina. The name has been thrilling to her since she understood the real history of it. However, she feels proud of her name and how she came to her name. Palestina herself tells this history on video. Her mother, at the time when she was pregnant and was waiting to give birth to her, she was stunned by a tragedy taking place in Palestine. Israeli soldiers killed a young Palestinian in front of his girlfriend. Sad because of the cruel killing of her lover young Palestinian girl, she got into her car, filled it with explosives and clashed along with this car bomb into an Israeli soldier convoy, killing as many as 20. The event took place in 1982, weeks before giving birth to her kosova’s girl, later named after “Palestine”. Her mother, stunned with the tragic news coming from Palestine, decided immediately that if the baby she was going to give birth to would be a girl, she would be named Palestine. Her husband and the entire family were severely against this unusual name, but she was set and did not defer the pressure. On the video, Palestina herself tells how she understood the reality of her name’s history. Through this video I wanted to present the importance of interpretation and influence of the news upon global society, including news dealing with tragic and horrifying events that spark extreme reactions as even today it is not that easy to distinguish the boundary between heroism and madness.

It’s a video about a Kosovar Albanian man, who lives in Switzerland. In fact the story is about his name. Tibet is an unusual name. Apart from having a strange name, the story how of he got his name makes this more interesting, strange and unusual. We, as a society, are used to hear names, which have some kind of attachment to the history of our own country, newborn children named after the war heroes or heroines. However, I am amazed when I hear names that in fact break the usual tradition of naming the newborn children. This story I am about to present has no relation to the history of the country the character is coming from. His name does not have any relation with the conflict or the history of the conflict itself it is an act of solidarity. Tibet was the second child in the family. He was the newborn male child, which for his family was the peak of happiness, and is the meaning of the Tibet as well. Apart from showing their solidarity with the situation in Tibet, which in many ways shared the same aims and ideals as Kosovo (home country of Tibet), liberty and fighting for human rights, his family had another meaning of this name in mind. Tibet – the worlds highest region. Through this video I wanted also to present the importance of interpretation and influence of the news on global society.

Seated near the window, Alban Muja was looking at landscape from a Windows Seat the crossings of strange lines, sometimes straight, while sometimes fractured, although like painted by a hand of a skittish child.

Jean Denant’s exhibition is an architectural study on a construction site, a space where an object is designed and built. It is not surprising that he is particularly fond of construction sites, industrial areas, spaces under construction, in transition and evolution. The artist’s interest is in the work in progress the process of the construction; the work as process. As an artist without studio, the exhibition itself becomes a construction site, where ideas are assembled like scaffolding and through this process the work takes shape. Physically Jean Denant, assembles traditional construction materials and also different representative elements such as photography, video, drawings and plans; these elements elaborate a vaster body of work, of which every exhibition is an autonomous proposition. His vocabulary takes the form of diagrams, models and plans. The materials: sticky tape, Polystyrene and fluorescent lights are industrial and often Jean Denant produces his elements using industrial machines. He comes into play in the toing and froing of thoughts, between the physical space and mental space, between the actual space and the artist’s preoccupations.

The exhibit entitled % vol. features works of painting, sculpture, photography, video and performance art, and proposes an experimental analysis of the parallel tracks that connect art with drinking. The thread running through the exhibit is the concept of “ next-to-last “ which, in the practice of both pursuits, allows to devote oneself fully to working towards an end, while stopping one step short of complete and utter self-destruction. What must be avoided above all is the last round, getting to the end : the final finish which would curtail any continuation of the activity, whether that activity is drinking or making art.
Deleuze introduces the concept of next-to-last in relation to the drinker’s urge towards self-destruction. The artist conceives of his art in a similar way, running the risk – if he succeeds in his ultimate intent – of killing what he has made : the fortunate artist is one who has never taken that step, who has never gone beyond that “ next-to-last ”. Thus we must put off – as long as possible – that last round of drinks, as Debord would have it, like on those lovely long evenings when talk abounds and the spark of inebriation feels like it could keep you awake forever, urging you one step closer to solving the mystery, thus it is with art : striving to put off that next-to-last step on the path towards artistic closure.

Ist der menschliche Körper noch der Maßstab der Welt, in der er sich entwickelt?
Der menschliche Körper spielt seine Rolle in der Gesellschaft hier nicht mehr. Er scheint wie inkompatibel mit seiner Umwelt, an Amnesie leidend von Verhaltensregeln, die sich untereinander verbinden.. Sie sind hier und da gegen eine Wand, eine Tür, ein Möbelstück, einen Pfeiler gelehnt. Die Körper sind hier und da…
Der Körper befindet isoliert in seiner eigenen Welt. Er wird nicht mehr lebendig erscheinen im urbanen Raum, sondern er wird eher wie ein Gegenstand erscheinen. Ein Gegenstand, den man hier- oder dorthin gestellt haben könnte. Man könnt ihn also in einem Sinn als leblos wahrnehmen. Aber in einem anderen Sinn ist er, ganz im Gegenteil, in seinem gewöhnlichen und mechanischen Funktionieren gestört. Der Kopf wird plötzlich zu einem Träger, zu einer Stütze. Die Arme dienen nicht mehr dazu, das Gleichgewicht zu halten und wirken diesem sogar entgegen. Die Füße und die Beine versuchen nicht mehr, den Körper fortzubewegen, sondern ihn zu bremsen und ihn am Rutschen zu hindern.
Entwickeln wir uns noch in einer Welt, die gebaut und ausgerichtet ist nach unseren Vorstellungen, nach unserem körperlichen Maßstab? Oder ist unsere Entwicklüng geführt? Ist der Raum, der uns umgibt, für und nach den Bedürfnissen unserer Bewegungsfähigkeit geschaffen? Oder sind es eher unsere Bewegungen, die aus dem Raum der Entwicklung unseres Leben resultieren?
Die Orte bieten sich hier entgegengesetzt ihrer primären Funktionen an. Der Körper verschiebt sich aus seiner Stellung, durch seine Bewegungsfähigkeit. Er positioniert sich fragenderweise an seinem Entwicklungsort. Die Funktionen des Körpers, der Arme, des Beckens und der Füße werden also verfremdet. Der Körper steht seinem Entwicklungs- und Lebensraum gegenüber wie um ihn in Frage zu stellen und vielleicht, um sich selbst in Frage zu stellen.

Excessive, L’esthetique de la Rupture is a title of yet another exhibition of the works of Maess – an artist not really noted in Poland but very much in demand West of the Oder river. The exhibition held in Berlin is focused on the process in which the precursor becomes its own successor/epigone. This process, vital for powerful artists, here is presented as a difficult battle between two great forces. As a result of that clash several works of art are created. The drawings, full of elegant, light and expressive lines, which are far from imitating digital or typographic simplification, are accompanied by frames from Last Tango in Paris by Bertolucci. It is both one of the inspirations/reference points here and one of the progenitor of the series, which makes the relationship between Bertolucci’s work and the drawings by Maess quite troublesome. It is not just a simple takeover as the artist consciously uses the chosen fragments as traces of broader narration, while transforming them at the same time. This way for example the glowing crimson red in some of her drawings derives from, among all, the blood of the dead lover – the phantasm from the last scene. The strategy here is the analysis of the border separating drawing and film without the mediation of animation or comic strip, and Maess seems to hale been using it both with pleasure and successfully for some time now. But this is just one of the artist’s tricky riddles, along with somewhat provocative virtuosity of the line, connected with a particularly ascetic technique.
This series of drawings is also the first in a long while (to be precise, since Portografia) in which a color is introduced. Here, however it does not serve to emphasize saudade, although this notion is still valid; the red has a much more basic role. The artist herself calls the method „danse macabre of red and black”. It means a clash of pinturas negras, representing the fear of being trapped in fetishistic repetition, clean an mechanical, with the glowing red, the explosion of creative energy, being an end and a clinamen at the same time, which makes place for the new forms of life. It is a playful/willful/perverse error she interprets as an explosion of re-creation. The main stake in this game is artistic immortality, contrary to Beckett’s “to be an artist is to fail as no other fail.” Of course this strategy is by no means free from narcissism, but also narcissism is a tool in Maess’s hands. Her drawings have something of the character of ivy or spider’s web: their content is dense, they themselves are concentric, coherent and firm. They absorb everything in their proximity. Any metaphors on the way, or just close to it, fall their prey.

The careful construction of the stretched stockings across the scenes of domestication, aims to raise questions upon the placement of the female role within contemporary society. The work references specifically the paradox between the sexualised and domesticated female identity. The use of stockings, take on organic forms that literally restrict the normal functioning of the spaces and appliances. Domestic appliances for which are associated with the upkeep of the home, traditionally the domain of the female.
